Living in a city that approximately 40 million people visit each year means you’re bound to have some visitors from time to time. Whether your family and friends are coming from near or far, as a Las Vegas local, you’re in charge of entertainment! Luckily, our beloved desert takes the (fruit) cake when it comes to charming holiday fun.
As one of the best free things to do in Las Vegas, your guests are likely looking forward to seeing the famous Bellagio Fountains. But they might not know of the fragrant gem hiding in plain sight inside the Bellagio: The Conservatory and Botanical Garden. Each season, a staff of 120 beautifully talented horticulturists design and construct a breathtaking scenery sculpted almost entirely from trees, plants, flowers, and seeds.
The 14,000-square-foot floral fairyland is especially exceptional during the winter months and pictures just don’t do it justice. With added bridges, gazebos, and water features, the botanical garden is absolutely something to experience in person. Even better, this Las Vegas Christmas activity is free, so you can splurge on special holiday gifts!
Take a stroll down The LINQ Promenade and you’ll instantly be transported to a winter wonderland with carolers, festive decorations, and your favorite holiday music ringing through the boulevard. Along the fountain stage, you’ll find singers, dancers, showgirls, and a spectacular light show consisting of more than 2,000 LED lights synchronized to the music. The famous High Roller even gets in on the action as it changes colors and “dances” along with the light show.
To top it off, a peaceful snowfall is scheduled to delight the desert dwellers every hour on a nightly basis. Newly added this year, you’ll be able to fly like Santa and his reindeer 1,080 feet above the promenade on the Fly LINQ zipline as all the busy shoppers bustle around beneath you!
If you and your visitors prefer to stay warm and toasty during the winter months, then grab some hot cocoa, snuggle up in the car, and make your way to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. There, you’ll find a 2.5-mile-long lighted holiday paradise that you can drive through without ever having to leave your vehicle. With over 3 million lights decorating your way, set your radio to 105.5 FM and listen to traditional holiday music as you and your guests take in the sights. The attraction is open from November 9-January 6, so you have plenty of time to enjoy this Las Vegas Christmas activity!
Sometimes guests might be a little leery about bringing their children to Sin City because the media doesn’t typically broadcast a family-friendly environment when showcasing our great city to out-of-towners. But locals know there couldn’t be anything further from the truth, especially during the holidays! One of the most entertaining Las Vegas Christmas activities for kids and families is the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village. As one of Vegas’ favorite charity organizations, it’s a must-do when creating your holiday itinerary.
The Magical Forest includes a stroll through an enchanted forest lit up with thousands of lights, a Forest Express Passenger Train, a magical carousel, an inflatable avalanche slide, mini-golf, a mini-coaster, and photos with Santa, of course! You’ll also find food, nightly entertainment, and dozens of photo opportunities. If you want to see your children’s eyes light up with holiday cheer, this is the place to go!
Another great option to keep your young (and young-at-heart!) guests entertained during their Las Vegas holiday is the iconic Springs Preserve! There, you’ll find the Springs Preserve Holiday Express, where you’ll climb aboard and be transported smack-dab into Santa’s very own village. Have your camera ready because you won’t want to miss capturing all the holiday merriment as you and your visitors create crafts together, decorate cookies, listen to storytelling, and see Santa during this magical holiday experience!
Ice skating in the desert? That’s right! Just like the colder cities, Las Vegas gets into the holiday spirit with some of the most common winter activities, including ice skating! Head out to The Cosmopolitan on the Strip for a night filled with winter magic. Every holiday season, the Boulevard Pool is transformed into 4,200 square feet of real ice. Not only can you enjoy the views and the lights, but there will also be seasonal food and beverages for all to enjoy!
If you’re not interested in heading down to the Strip for a winter wonderland, then head over Downtown Summerlin and sign up for ice skating for the whole group at the City National Arena, otherwise known as the Vegas Golden Knights’ practice arena! So gather up the group, dress for the cold rink temperatures, and step onto the ice where some of the greatest hockey players have skated!
Las Vegas might not be the first location that comes to mind when you think of a winter wonderland vacation for family, but it puts on quite the show during the holiday season. If you’re lucky enough to call Las Vegas home, you know that our city is full of diverse, family-friendly Christmas activities. Put together an unforgettable itinerary this year to make the 2018 holiday season one your guests won’t soon forget!
